Environment : Linux, Apache, Perl, MYSQL.
Role / Position : Programmer Lead
Period : Dec 2005 - Aug 2009
Description :
The chief product we work on is MarketVision – a competitive rates
shopping application. This web-based application gathers, stores and reports competitor
rates from various web sites. Reports available in MarketVision compare the rates that a
specific customer (such as an individual hotel) charges for their products (hotel rooms),
with the rates that the competition (other similar hotels in the same city) charge for
similar products.
MarketVision delivers the results of rate shopping through various reports and outputs.
Users can view reports online, through the MarketVision user interface, in html, PDF,
excel, or CSV formats. Reports can also be emailed to customers on a scheduled basis in
those same formats.
MarketVision gather rates to support customer competitive rate shopping reports by executing software agents that extract rates from the data sources where rates are displayed. The software code for each agent is customized/hand-crafted for a specific data source.
Responsibilities :
Developing the Web shopping agents referred to by an abstraction ‘repository’ for various web sites which cuts across the domain of hotels, car rentals, airlines and travel packages. Comfortable with perl modules WWW::Mechanize, Date::Parse, Date::Calc, Date::Format, XML::Simple and apt with the usage of regular expressions. Over 3.5 years of my association with this project I have matured from being a developer to being the technical lead of the project. Have developed repositories from scratch for around 50 sites and have fixed broken repositories for around 500 sites. Being a lead have to coordinate the efforts of team members with regards to websites under my domain and also solve the technical and logical roadblocks they face.
Have written perl scripts to automate tasks of fetching data from remote servers in order to synch up local databases, automating tasks of periodic backups of database.
Have written scripts to generate XLS reports for frequently run database queries, using perl modulesSpreadsheet::WriteExcel, Spreadsheet::ParseExcel::Simple.
As our delivery model is built around a ticket based system, have to send deliverables every single working day. This requires exhaustive reviewing. Have been leading this task since 2 years. This has given me ample experience of client communication primarily in written mode.
